Somehow I find it hard to call the “surge” a success. Sure military deaths are way down but not down enough for me. There are vipers in the nest. Last month, it was discovered that two American soldiers where deliberately killed and 3 wounded by an Iraqi soldier on patrol with them. As long as our troops continue to be killed I can’t see the “surge” as being successful. The supposed reason for the “surge” was to allow the Iraqi government time to actually run the country. That has not happened. As long as insurgents are imbedded in the Iraqi army, our soldiers are at risk. The Iraqi government does not seem to be working to try to quell the differences between the Sunnis the Kurds and the Shiites. This has been an internal problem for many years. These are Iraqi forces, who are supposed to assume control as American troops withdraw.

Violence has lessened in western and central Iraq but Mosul and other parts of northern Iraq remain volatile. Diyala Province is Iraq’s most troubled region where a U.S. soldier was killed by a bomb on Saturday. There has been a war between the media and the military because of the negative war coverage. Until recently, how could it not be negative? Battlefield successes from the troop increase in Iraq are now reflected in more upbeat news coverage. Let’s hope that the success continues and that military deaths continue to fall.
