As the Bush administration continues to laud the success of the surge, little is being done about the escalating violence in Afghanistan. The next president inherits the horrible mess that Bush created. More American and allied forces died in Afghanistan in June than during any month since the war began in 2001. The deaths in Afghanistan outnumbered the June deaths in Iraq.

While violence has declined in Iraq the expected political reforms have yet to come. Using the decline of violence as a reason, the White House is planning to stay on in Iraq. The next president will be faced with about 130,000 American troops still fighting there. The debate between Obama and McCain about bringing troops home goes on, with Obama seeming to waffle about his earlier plan to bring the troops home within 16 months. McCain wants to stay until “victory” whatever that means. How can we fight two wars? Our troops are strained beyond reason and we are accepting the enlistment of felons and others that the Army would not previously accept.
