Economy, taxes, the war and bashing Clinton ruled the debate. Laid back and slow in responding, Richardson held his own on most issues. Abortion was a topic not touched upon. All, with the possible exception of Rudy Giullani, are anti-abortion and want to repeal Roe vs. Wade. The religious right which makes up about a third of the Republican party will not support Giullani if he is nominated. With 7 of the 9 Supreme Court judges Catholics, things don’t bode well for women if a Republican gets elected. After years of fighting for the right to choose, I’d hate to think that women will be, once again, relagated to back alley abortions. I certainly don’t want abortion used as birth control but as a last ditch choice for health reasons, rape or incest and those who financially cannot afford another child. Studies show that there is more physical abuse toward unwanted children. Every woman should be allowed to make a choice. If church and state are separate, why should religious convictions dictate our laws? Let the churches keep their beliefs in their congregations and not let them spillover into laws for everyone.
A lot of things can happen to the front runners on both sides before election time but surely the war will play a big part on the way the nation votes.
