Does anyone really believe that the US and Iran will come to a meeting of the minds, at the meetings to begin in Baghdad today? At this point in time there seems to be only finger pointing and recriminations on both sides. The return to Iraq, of al-Sadr after 4 months in Iran has added to the furor with his anti-American speechs. He wants the US troops out of Iraq hoping to gain power but states no timetable. Some Iraqi political forces have close ties with Iran which may be formenting sectarian violence. The religious factions in Iraq are so entrenched that I see little success of a Democracy being formed when we leave. If we declare “Mission Accomplished” and move our combat troops out to neighboring countries, any escalation in sectarian violence may only be temporary, with some of the 23 religious militias quelling the insurents and al-Qaeda. The US cannot force democracy on another country. We gave it a try and now it’s falling apart. What is Cheney going to have his talking head do now? Bush, in my opinion, doesn’t have the smarts to think his way out of a paper bag, but relies on others to put words in his mouth and the same old words over and over.

Putting our hopes on Gen. Patraeus, who is a brilliant tactition, is letting us go down with the ship. What may help us now, is international invervention but our standing around the world is very low. Bush is putting so many lives on the line waiting until September for a report from Patraeus that I see it as a crime against our nation…Joan Lough
