Well, here is another half-assed Bush idea with dreams of a democracy in Iraq. A simply hugh embassy is being built in the Green Zone of Baghdad. It is costing taxpayers $592 million and will be the largest and most expensive embassy in the world. It will be on 104 acres, about the size of the Vatican. Resplendent with bomb proof walls for needed security. It is due to be fininished in September. Contrary to other rebuilding in Iraq it is on time and within it’s budget. It will house about 615 people. This smells of a very long term presense in Iraq. If the Democrats win the 2008 election, I doubt if such a large diplomatic force will be required in Baghdad. Seems to me just another needless expense. Iraq experts believe the project was flawed from the beginning, and are concerned that it’s 27 buildings will become an enormous, targeted white elephant that will be an even greater liability when the Americans scale back their presence in Iraq. What will the future Iraq be like if diplomats from the US and other countries, must continue the need for bomb proof living and working environments? I hope that I live long enough to see how this is all played out. Do I seem a bit pessimistic that things aren’t going to change much in the near future the way things are going in DC now? I can only hope that the Rebublicans get fed up enough to help put a stop the this endless war…Joan Lough
