The Supreme Court got something right for a change. In a vote of five to four the court overturned a 2006 law that did not allow detainees at Guantanamo Bay to challenge their detention in US civilian courts. Of course the four most conservative judges ruled against the new ruling. This is the third time that the court has ruled against the Bush administration in regard to treatment of prisoners since 2004. Bush did not agree with the ruling but said that he would abide by it.

At this time there are 270 men held at the US naval base, suspected of terrorism or being linked to al-Qaeda and the Taleban. This ruling may help restore the credibility of the US as a “model for the rule of law across the globe” but there may not action on the ruling for quite a while.
