Torture, “the action or practice of inflicting severe pain on someone as a punishment or to force them to do or say something”. I can’t count the number of times I have heard someone in a high government position say “America does not torture”. In my opinion that is weasel wording. Maybe the military, according to the Army Field Manual, is not supposed to torture but look what happened at Guantanamo. The ban on torture does not apply to the CIA and Bush will ban the bill that would require to CIA to follow the Army Field Manual This coming weekend President Bush will address the nation to explain why he plans to veto the intelligence authorization bill which is a ban on torture. It will be interesting to hear how he defends his position.
History shows that our country has done some terrible things but it’s only during the Bush years that the government has actually legalized torture and defending torture is condoned by the right wing. It makes sense to me that a detainee being tortured would say anything to get the torture to stop. I’m sure that we get a lot of misinformation that way. Our image in the world is going down, down, down.
