I listened very carefully to the Sunday morning political talk shows. For the most part I heard the same old stuff, some good ideas but not a lot of action. John Warner, while asking to bring home 5,000 military by Christmas, still will do nothing to thwart Bush if he continues his mantra of “stay the course” because Bush is the Commander-in-Chief. Sounds like he’s just blowing hot air. The most interesting views were from Richard Engel the NBC correspondent. He’s been in Iraq since the beginning and I admire his dedication to bringing the war into our living rooms without a political slant. I listened very carefully to his reporting the view of many military in combat action. It seems that many, do not want to give up and be sent home without finishing the job. In my opinion that is the general military mentality. We lose face if we don’t win. I say lose face and save lives in this particular war. Engel also sees our way out of the war with the least damage to the Iraqi people is to engage Iran and other Middle Eastern countries to help solve political problems that the Iraqi government has been unable to do. There is no way military action will end it. The surge only has managed to put a lid on some of the civil war fighting.
Bob Schieffer had an interview with John and Elizabeth Edwards on the “Face the Nation” show. I was very impressed with both of them and have decided that’s where my vote will go. To me he comes across as being honest and knowledgeable about the issues that he would face as president. All the fuss about a $400 haircut seems pretty petti to me.
