For the past month the U.S. military has been walling off a part of Baghdad. Militia fighters with rocket-propelled grenades, machine guns and small arms have been trying to halt construction of the wall. In my opinion it’s the wrong approach. It isolates and divides people. Before we invaded Iraq the people in Baghdad were living together in relative harmony. Now it’s sect against sect and neighbor against neighbor. Is building a wall truly making a safe zone for Sadar City? Iraqi and American soldiers are being shot by snipers and on Monday the military had to call in a a Hellfire missile strike on a sniper position. This is a face of the “success” of the surge. The formal truce that was announced in the Green Zone has meant nothing here.

Despite being fired upon, the military is working night and day to complete the construction. The militias are trying to tell us something and we are not listening. We need to bring our troops home!
