Losing a war is not part of the military mentality. War is their business. By all observations the “surge” will continue until the summer if Gen. Petraeus and Bush have their way. They can choose how much collateral damage (dead military) they are willing to accept to meet their objectives. At the rate we are going, how many men and women will they sacrifice? This war, this unnecessary war, has been mismanaged from the beginning and it continues on. I doubt the very credibility of the report. Some military gains, in my opinion are not enough to overshadow the lack of progress of the Iraqi government. Military might will not win this war. The Iraqi people have to end the civil war, we can’t do it. They need a strong government to mediate with the warring factions and that isn’t happening.
More than 3,700 soldiers have been killed so far and more than 27,000 injured. Almost 90% of the wounded survive, coming home missing limbs and with severe brain injuries and post traumatic stress disorder. The majority of the injured are between 20 and 30 years old, almost the dawn of their lives. Does Bush think of this as collateral damage from his ill conceived war? What does it take for Congress to say “enough is enough” and find a way to get us out of Iraq now, doing the least harm to an area that we have already trashed. To me the number of troops to return home in December are just to pacify the people who want all troops to come home.
