31 December 2007
I commend People Magazine for this months issue’s tribute to America’s fallen heroes of the Iraq and Afghanistan wars. I don’t read their magazine but one of my daughters brought the article to me because she knew that I would use it in my blog. Over 1,000 brave young people lost their lives in 2007, bringing the total since the invasion began to 4,354, at the time the article went to press. How can Congress live with the refusal to bring our troops home? What is even worse to me is that average age of these military members is about 24 years old. So many lives cut short.
What can we expect from both Republicans and Democrats in our government as we face a new year? Frankly, I’m not hopeful. Does anyone really care as we feed young lives to the insurgents and extremists? I listen as the Presidential hopefuls bicker and harangue and have a feeling of dismay. What has our country come to? We have allowed the Bush Administration run roughshod over the Constitution and take away many of our “given” rights. Where are the patriots who will stand up and fight, to the death, if need be, to protect our country? Fight, not on the battlefields of war but the battlefields of Congress.
I truly hope that 2008 really does bring change for our country. I’m still up in the air about just who can do the momentous task that faces the next president. From my point of view, and it won’t surprise anyone, there is no one on the Republican side that really impresses me. I’t pretty much the same about being impressed by the Democrats. For me, Edwards comes closest to offering what I’m looking for. As I see it, there are a few nut cases on both sides but that is just my point of view. At age 78, I take promises of politicians with a grain of salt and I feel freer to make what some think are outrageous statements. Seniors seem to be able to get away with that sort of behavior. I hope that the USA and the rest of the world has a much better 2008.
