Once again the Bush administration is trying to screw up things for the next president if he is a Democrat. One of Vice President Cheney’s senior aides is being touted to become a top official at the Energy Department. If it goes thru, one of most ardent opponents of environmental regulation would be in a top position and would be making department policies on climate change. Sounds like a fox in the hen house. Let’s name this guy…F. Chase Hutto III. In his behind-the-scenes activities he helped rewrite rules, that were strict, which helped protect the air that we breathe and water that we drink. He challenged any proposals that would enact controls on industry.

It appears that the administration is determined to resist new environmental protections. They are working for big business not the American public. One of the jobs would be to perform environmental analyses and we all know how that info could be corrupted. He could also decide whether to regulate carbon dioxide emissions under the Clean Air Act. Just the kind of guy that we need in a top position. Hutto has been deputy assistant to the vice president for domestic policy. Most recently he helped scale back a rule that was proposed by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration to protect North Atlantic right whales.

If Hutto takes over the Energy Department’s climate policy office, his impact could last beyond Bush’s term in office. Hutto’s policy decisions would be difficult for the next administration to reverse quickly. The Bush administration is known for putting politics ahead of science.
