Some democrats touring Iraq see the surge as succeeding. They choose not to see the mounting civil, political and social unrest. Some of the media also goes along with this rosy picture. The troops on the ground don’t see anything rosy as they face death and dismemberment. Things can’t get much worse if we leave Iraq. Our presence may have gotten Iraqis from living under a tyrant, but it has robbed them of their self-respect and they now live with Islamist, militia and criminal violence. To retain dignity they must call the US an army of occupation and force our withdrawal.
The Bush administration and officers in the field are already back pedaling and changing their tune about “democracy” in Iraq. They are now willing to settle for a government that functions and can bring security instead of a workable democratic government, which was one of the Bush administration’s goals of the war. In the Middle East and other non-Western countries democracy isn’t a tradition. The Iraqi government is totally ineffective after five years and seems dysfunctional and paralyzed. Thousands of innocent people are dying violently every month across the country. Thousands are fleeing to neighboring countries. The United States need to allow Iraq to control its own destiny.
