Last night Karl Rove gave a speech in Seattle for the Republican Party. I sure didn’t hear anything new. We’re still getting the same old story “ if we don’t fight them in Iraq, we’ll have to fight them here” (a fear tactic). If we pull out of Iraq does he really think that hoards of insurants will flood the US and create the kind of carnage that is going on in Iraq? There is always the chance that some diehard extremist will blow himself up here, but so far that hasn’t happened following 9/11. Since most of what is going on in Iraq is a civil war, our troops leaving may possibly make things better there. At least our troops will be removed from the center of a civil war and the Iraqi government will be forced to address the problems there.

Now we jump to today. This morning I listened to Vice President Dick Cheney being interviewed by Bob Schieffer on Face The Nation. It was very upsetting to hear him call the Democratic congressional leaders “irresponsible”. The Republican Adminstration leaders were the irresponsible ones when they took this nation to war on false pretenses and against UN sanction. Over the war years Cheney has said time and time again how well things were going and once, in 2005, that we were in “the final throes of the war”. Do I have any faith in what he says? No way!!! The whole strategy of this war was wrong from the first bombing to this surge strategy. The Pentagon war strategists were shunted aside and Bush’s puppets took over. In my opinion, the inept people that were sent into Iraq to run things at the very start of the war, started the downslide of today’s present situation. The carnage goes on and on. Bring our troops home and let the Iraqi Security forces and government protect their people and put a stop to the civil war going on in their country.

An interesting aside, when questioned about Scooter Libby, Cheney would not discuss the conviction of his “friend” Scooter Libby, who was his “close friend”. Cheney was also asked if he had spoken to Libby since the trial and Cheney answered “no”. Scheiffer then asked “but as your friend, wouldn’t you even call and express your regrets? I mean, I am surprised to hear you say that”. At that point Cheney got a look on his face like he was sucking on a sour lemon (an expresson that I think he often has) and replied “I just–I haven’t had occasion to do that”. Some friend. My thoughts for today…Joan Lough
