It seems that some staunch Republicans are crossing over to vote Democratic. People who used to like John McCain think that he’s aligning himself too closely with Bush and no longer want to be tarred with the Bush brush. In states that allow crossover voting, Republican voters have been crossing over to vote in Democratic contests by about 10%. I think that they are driven by concerns about the economy and with discontent over Bush administration policies. They are looking for someone who has the best understanding of how to pull off the recovery that this country needs.

It may be that it doesn’t matter who the final candidate is as long as that person can be seen as being able to be elected in the fall. Surveys are showing that both Obama and Clinton are benefiting from crossover voting. In the Pennsylvania vote on April 22, about 5 percent of people voting in the Democratic primary were Republicans who switched their party registration. The American public is starting to wake up!
