Four credible reports about the success of the “surge” have come out before the Petraeus/Crocker report comes out next week. There are suggestions that, that report will be written by the Bush team. It figures! The results of all the pre-reports are not hopeful. Remember that the pre-Petraeus reports are nonpartisan. These reports give credence to the fact that the “surge” is not working.

The Iraqi Interior Ministry which controls the Iraqi national police force is riddled with sectarianism and corruption. One report recommended that the national police force be disbanded. The Iraqi “democracy” is falling apart. Without a political infrastructure in Iraq, any military progress will not last long. I think that Petraeus is setting us up to be in Iraq for years to come. U.S. officials believe the Maliki government is corrupt in addition to being ineffectual. Additionally Maliki’s office has impeded investigations of fraud and crime within the government.
