Here is another example of Bush’s disregard of the environment and actions that damage whales and dolphins. In a case of the Navy vs whales, Bush exempted the navy from some environmental laws. Sonar that the Navy uses during warfare training exercises can permanently damage whales and dolphins. The waiver is for training in California but a precedent could be set. Bush claims that the training is “essential to national security”. Where have I heard that song before? Listening in on phone calls without authorization is another issue that, according to Bush is “essential to national security”. Environmentalists hope that a compromise can be reached with the Navy which said that they already have marine mammal protections in place and vowed that personnel off the coast of California would not use the midfrequency sonar “if they knew that orcas — whose local populations are protected under the Endangered Species Act — were present”. Let’s hope that the Navy can find a way to conduct training exercises and protect whales and dolphins.
The next president will have a lot of such rulings of the Bush administration to rectify. I hear the phrase “Take Back America”, which in my hear of hearts is something that I hope to see. The America that I grew up in, has been swallowed up during the last 5 years with so many infringements against personal liberties that it breaks my heart. Bush’s worldwide crusade for democracy is not working very well here at home.
