For 2 days Petraeus and Crocker gave a Power Point Presentation which served, in my opinion, to blow smoke in the eyes of the beholders. Gen. Petraeus talks of sending 30,000 troops home next summer, a group that was scheduled to go home anyway. At that time we will be back to where we were 18 months ago with very little change in the security of the country and nothing from the government to meet benchmarks and a greater loss of life of both military and Iraqis. To me, I see no change of direction. Waiting until next summer to send the surge group home is really poor planning. It seems that Bush is getting himself off the hook by using the Pettraeus report to govern our actions in Iraq. As far as I’m concerned, Petraeus is another Bush puppet and a bit of a Pollyanna.
It’s time for the Republicians in Congress to do the right thing and move toward getting our troops home as soon as safely possible. Why should our troops continue to die for a lost cause. The “baby” steps that the surge has made in Baghdad is not worth the price of lives being lost. The minute that we leave Baghdad the Sunni/Shia factions will begin slaughtering each other until one of them wins and Baghdad will simmer down.
