Southern Iraq, where there is a lot of oil, is seeing more and more violence and this started within days of Petraeus’ September report. As British forces withdraw and the Iraqi army takes over, Shiite gangs are fighting Shiite gangs for control and two provincial governors were assassinated. The U.K. has announced that it will send a thousand troops home by Christmas. That leads me to believe that things will continue to get worse not better as Petraeus predicted. Oil, the reason we went into Iraq in the first place. is being fought for by Iraqi factions, all over the country.
Southern Iraq is strategic because it generates about 80 percent of Iraq’s oil. Also the main U.S. supply route from Kuwait runs through the area. Once again we are forced to wait and watch.
