The intelligence report about Iran, just released, halted the march to war led by some Administration hawks. Recently an anti-war group of Pentagon officials and military leaders have pushed back privately and publicly, on the wisdom of going to war with Tehran. Nine of the 16 intelligence agencies whose views are part of the NIE’s are U.S. military. The U.S. military, strained by wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, has no desire for a third war.

Iran, has suspended — not terminated — its nuclear-weapons efforts. Tehran is continuing to “keep its options open.” If Iran continues with their enrichment activities, then the opportunity to resume their nuclear weapons program is there. The international community needs to join the United States in pressuring the Iranian government to keep its nuclear-weapons efforts dead. Defense Secretary Robert Gates says that non-military measures are the best way to curb Iran’s nuclear program.
