President Bush is dumping his big mistake, the Iraq Way, on the next president. If the next president is a democrat I expect to see the troops starting to come home. If it is McCain I expect to see a large war funding request, which is not in Bush’s 2008 budget. The war funding would be almost $200 billion (he has alloted $70 billion) plus the $500 billion Pentagon request. The administration says that it is waiting for Gen. Petraeus’ spring report before requesting more money. Since Defense Secretary Robert Gates says that he is not recommending more troop withdrawals at this time, you know what that means, money, money, money for continued war funding.

A congressional requirement that the administration present its full war funding request at the beginning of each year is not being adhered to. This looks like Bush is dumping responsibility for Iraq on the next president. As I said before, this would be a good time to stop funding Bush’s biggest mistake. A democratic president will be in the position of being accused of not supporting the troops. Will Obama or Clinton be strong enough to put a stop to the war by not funding it?
