The Thursday night Democratic debate between Obama and Clinton was almost disgustingly nice. Evidently adverse comments about their going at each other tooth and nail made them reconsider debate tactics. Obama stated that one of them probably would be the next president as the candidates have dropped to two. Personal attacks were dropped and both candidates spelled out their differences on major issues. Clinton defended her 2002 Senate vote to authorize war against Iraq and had to discuss her changing stand on Iraq. Since Obama has opposed the war since 2002 he believes that he would be the strongest person to challenge the Republican nominee. They both tried to stress how they would be more electable than a republican.

At the end of the debate Obama behaved in a very courtly way, holding Clinton’s chair for her as she stood up, holding each others’ elbows whispering very pleasantly. Because the Republicans are still committed to George Bush’s policy, a debate with Republicans will prove to be a very lively debate. During the debate they both bashed Republicans rather than each other. They both praised John Edwards hoping for his endorsement. This debate was a pleasant change from the bickering seen in previous debates.
