I was “good†on Good Friday, no bashing. Now I am once again energized to let off steam. As if roadside bombs weren’t bad enough, trucks with chlorine gas are being used in Iraq more frequently, perhaps as many as six since January. This gas has many side effects, some will not be seen for years. My husband’s father was gassed in World War I and died many years later from lung cancer attributed to being gassed. During the recent attack in Ramadi yesterday, thirty people were killed, many of them children. As many as 30 were treated for shrapnel wounds and 50 were treated for breathing problems Who knows what lies down the road for them. Would the insurgents be using these tactics if the US was not involved? The Iraqi people deserve better than this. These were ordinary people going about their daily business. This civil war needs to be quelled by the Iraqi government thru diplomacy. I believe that our presence in Iraq inflames the insurents. Come on George, bring the troops home.
Now to another front, Afghanistan. There seems to be some headway being made along the borders of Pakistan and Afghanistan. The governments of those countries in addition to the US, NATO and the international community need to work together to insure success to create a peaceful and stable Afghanistan. Pakistan is trying to create “reconstruction opportunity zones†in the tribal areas. Right now it seems to be two steps forward, one step back. We must not let occasional setbacks break that bond.
Some Afghan refugee camps are being moved from the Pakistan side to Afghanistan. The Taliban elements often merge into these camps and this is where they find recruits. Hopefully the Taliban can be weeded out.
My 2 cents for the day…Joan Lough
