The last couple of days, the massacre in VA completely overshadowed the carnage going on in Iraq. Almost continuious coverage by the media at VA Tech gave the Bushies a reprieve from the horrenous things going on in Baghdad. The “surge” seems to have given the insurgents more incentive to set off bigger bombs and kill more civilians. Bush reminds me of a bulldog with it’s jaws locked on it’s prey. The prey for Bush is setting a timetable for our troops to come home. I sure wish that he would wake up and smell the roses. I think that he is off in la la land, completely out of touch with reality.
The Iraqi Prime Minister, Iyad Allawi, just announced that Iraq will take over security for all of Iraq by the end of the year. How many more of our brave service men and women will lose their lives before then and how many more will suffer horrible injuries. We can’t count on Allawi’s word. He needs to know when we are really going to get out and I bet that he would be forced to take over securtity much sooner than the end of the year. It seems like he is stringing us along. I also think that it’s hogwash that the insurants will lie low until we’re gone, as many hawks tell us, if we give them timetable for our departure. I’m sure that the civil war will continue long after we leave but that’s not our business. The insurents will have no “invaders” to fight. As I said before, I can’t see them following us to the US en mass. If our Homeland Security is as good as DC claims then we’ll be on our toes for sneak attacks from small cells of zealots here at home…Joan Lough
