Social awareness is on the rise among our youth and the number of young people 18 and younger who volunteer is also on the rise. I started public service with the Veteran’s of Foreign Wars, at age nine and then moved on to local organizations and a stint in the Peace Corps from 1989 to 1993. I’m still going strong in my community at 79. Community Service is required in the school system here in Seattle and many kids are grabbing the ball, expanding, and finding more social causes for which to work. Opportunities to volunteer are everywhere and needn’t be limited to young people.
Many young people and organizations across the nation are raising money to buy mosquito nets, that prevent malaria, for African children. At $10 per net, a trip less to McDonalds or the movies makes for an easy donation. Young people are jumping on the band wagon. It’s a rewarding feeling to be able to save a life for such a small donation. A net is something tangible that you can see touch and is more appealing for the young than giving money for research .
