29 August 2007
The month of August is almost gone and the Petraeus report is looming. Al-Qaeda is less of a problem in Iraq than the civil war there, but it seems to be growing in Afghanistan. Some parts of Baghdad are benefiting from the surge but other cities have experienced greater problems from Sunni fighting Shia. As many people realize, we cannot win a ground war in Iraq. Our troops continue to die in large numbers (53 last week) and week after week I hear talk about a troop drawdown, without any action. Do I feel safer since the surge, I think not. To me it hasn’t made one heck of a difference about safety here at home. I say drawdown the surge numbers (30,000 or more) and redeploy our combat troops to bordering countries. It wouldn’t take long to discover what problems our departure would cause.
