As I listened to the debate between Obama and Clinton, trying to overlook the little jabs here and there, I couldn’t help but wonder about substance. Obama, a convincing orator, has swayed a large number of people to vote for him but have people really looked beneath the words for substance. In a way he reminds me of an Evangelist with a very smooth tongue at a revival meeting. I have a gut level feeling that he needs more seasoning before he steps into the role that he’s aiming for. We need a president with enough backbone to face the issues ahead. Most democrats in Congress haven’t shown me much backbone in their fear of defying President Bush or they were afraid of angering corporate lobbies and losing campaign contributions. We sure as heck need lobby reform.

I think that most Democrats lack courage. If we find competence we must then have confidence in our next leader. From what I’ve read, Obama didn’t do a heck of a lot of voting on issues as a Senator so that doesn’t inspire a lot of confidence on my part. Writing this blog for several years has allowed me to ponder political and social issues and I will continue to do so long after Bush is gone.
