1 April 2008

Here it is April Fool’s Day and guess who I’m going to talk about. Another gaffe from our illustrious leader. He has chosen Steven Bradbury to run the Justice Department’s of Legal Counsel. This is the same Bradbury that in a lower job in that office, signed off on secret legal memos allowing torture including waterboarding in U.S. detention camps. After Congress outlawed waterboarding, he assured Bush that he would ignore that law. Great! This guy is poison to those on both sides of the aisle and will never be confirmed for that position. The Office of Legal Counsel is charged with telling the executive branch if it is acting legally. Some position for a person like Bradbury. It’s supposed to be based on law not the party.

Bush has refused to withdraw the nomination so the Senate’s Democratic leaders are going to stop processing other controversial nominations. They plan to keep the Senate in pro forma sessions during vacations to keep Bush from making a recess appointment of Bradbury and others being objected to. This ploy is bad for the country as many positions need filling. All it takes to move forward is for Bush to withdraw Bradbury’s name. Knowing how hardheaded Bush is, I think that in this case he is shooting himself in the foot by being close to paralyzing his own administration. Mr. Bush, you get my award of April Fool of the day.
