Why have American taxpayers spent $49 billion to rebuild Iraq when Iraq has garnered $79 billion in oil resources since 2005 and will reach $156 billion by the end of the year? I smell a rat. Who the heck in the American government is overseeing the large amount of money that Iraq is amassing and still letting the U.S. bear the burden of rebuilding. A lot of that building is riddled with fraud and corruption with shoddy work being done. Shoddy enough, for members of our military being electrocuted by poor quality work on bases.
What Iraq is spending is peanuts compared to our amounts. American officials told taxpayers that Iraq would use oil money to pay for reconstruction. Has that happened? No, it was just more misinformation fed the American public by a sneaky administration. All talk and no action. Several senior Iraqi officials declined to comment or said that they were not familiar with a recent financial report.
It seems that our “successful” serge has not allowed Iraqi officials to get their financial expenditures operational, so we continue to prop them up monetarily. Let’s get real Washington! To my mind, this is another good reason for us to pack our bags and leave. Iraq has only spent 1% of it’s operation expenses in its budget to maintain reconstruction projects that have been built with either American or Iraqi money. Makes you wonder if these projects will have any long-term impact. The longer we stay in Iraq the more of our money goes down the tubes.
Iraqi Parliament has stalled legislation that includes a $22 billion supplemental budget for 2008. That bill is mired in wider negotiations over provincial elections. Boy, do they need to get their act together. With so much American assistance available, the Iraqi government does not feel much urgency spend its own money.
