Bush remained as pig headed as usual during his meeting with the press with his interim Iraq war report. We got the same old apcray as we usually do. This business of giving the “surge” a chance to work is wearing pretty thin. He stressed that the Iraqi government wasn’t functioning well because of security problems in the country and that they needed more time. That government is a fiasco and will never function well enough by Bush’s standards for our troops to start heading home. Bush says that we are fighting an enemy willing to kill women and children to promote their ideology. Aren’t we doing pretty much the same? The idea of forcing our way of life in an area that clearly doesn’t want our presence seems insane to me.
The press gave Bush a drubbing about his stubborn stance on troop withdrawal and he came up with more lame answers. Such as, sectarian violence is down a bit, 8 of 18 benchmarks have been met but car bombs are up. Bush keeps coming back to Anbar provence as a shining example of success with tribal leaders joining US troops fighting insurgents. That’s just a drop in a very big bucket.
Bush says that he has full confidence in the military and congress should not try to dictate what goes on in the field. Where was Bush’s admiration of the military when he was shirking his own military duty? We are also getting the old wheeze about al-Qaeda gaining strength in Iraq and preparing to take over if we leave. Al-Qaeda is gaining strength in Afghanistan, not Iraq, because we did not follow up on nailing the Taliban there, but put all our eggs in the Iraq basket. We just don’t have enough military strength to put more troops back in Afghanistan to quell the al-Qaeda and Taliban buildup. Bush has created a hell hole in Iraq and has no clue of how to get us out and still save face. Give up on saving face George, and do something honorable by getting our troops out of the mess that your admistration created.
The head of Homeland Security is also using fear tactics with his “gut feeling” the we are going to be in trouble here at home this summer. By the way, what security color is being assigned to “gut level”?..Joan Lough
