U.S. military and Iraqi civilian deaths are down and it’s time to seriously make plans to bring the troops home in an orderly way. Of course, this is assuming that the Democrats rule the White House after the election. Whatever changes that were made on the ground in Iraq, seems to be working enough to get us out of there. There were 19 combat deaths in our military and about 528 Iraqi deaths, not counting insurgents, in the month of May.
While the surge may be the reason for the lessening of violence, it seems to be lacking in the political reconciliation that it promised. There are concerns by the Iraqis about a long term U.S. presence in their country and interference on their sovereignty. The upcoming presidential campaigning needs to address the need for
Iraqis to step up to solve their own problems. There is also the possibility that we are just seeing a lull in the violence but whatever it is, we need to move forward with plans to get out of Iraq.
