While in Germany on Wednesday President Bush pooh-poohed the idea the the Iraqis were opposing the idea of long term troops in Iraq, saying the it was only “the noise of a freer Iraqi society. Yeah sure! The Iraqis don’t want us there any more than the majority of Americans want us to be there. I love the rosy spin that Bush puts on events in Iraq. As long as U.S. military and innocent Iraqis are still being killed I see nothing rosy about events on the ground in Iraq. Bush claims that Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki “appreciates our presence there” and any information other than that is due to inaccurate media reports. Horse feathers!!!
Later this year the United Nations mandate for the U.S. military presence in Iraq expires and Bush is really pushing for a new agreement before he leaves office. Iraqi officials are concerned because the new agreement calls for the United States to maintain nearly 60 bases in their country indefinitely. Because of the insurgents Iraq continues to be very dangerous for our military and I don’t think that danger will abate soon. If order is to be maintained in Iraq it’s up to the Iraqi government and army to take over. We’ve been waiting for five years for the Iraqi government to step up and actually lead their country. No luck so far.
As far as Iran goes, the way we are warning them about their nuclear program seems to make them respond like an unruly teenager and do the opposite of what we want them to do. Where is a diplomat who is able to have a meeting of the minds with Iran? All we seem to be doing is heaping sanctions on them without much success.
