Yesterday the House of Representatives approved a bill, 389 to 30, to bring all security contractors in the Iraq war zone to be judged by American criminal law for any illegal behavior, a long overdue bill, in my opinion. In addition the F.B.I. will be required to investigate any wrongdoing. The bill had strong opposition from the White House. It seems that the tide is turning for people who have been walking in lock-step with the Bush administration. Let’s hope that there is followup on making these contractors accountable. If this bill is enacted there will be no authority over past conduct of the contractors. Even if enacted, the House bill would have no retroactive authority over past conduct by Blackwater or other contractors. Who knows where else in the world Blackwater, USA has performed violent acts without repercussion as they have a contract to protect State Department diplomats around the world.
