In my humble opinion we have another wacko in a key government position, Homeland Security Secretary Chertoff. My biggest issue is the 18 foot high fence being erected to wall off Mexico from the U.S. This fence is costing taxpayers around $7 billion and by many estimates will not keep us more secure. What is this guy thinking? In addition, many portions of the wall are going thru private property with a portion of private U.S. land being behind the wall and the actual border. Chertoff has told these land owners that it is their duty to give up their land for U.S. security. Horsefeathers!!! There has to be a better way to deal with illegals entering than trying to make us secure with walls. When I think of it’s likeness to the Berlin Wall on a much grander scale, I shudder. What are we allowing our country to become? In addition there are gaps in the wall from 10 to 12 miles wide with no fence but “technological security” which has yet to be perfected. Come on now! In whose pocket are the companies that are building the wall?

My next issue are the raids being conducted by the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement, raids that are sweeping up legals as well as illegals. In many areas, local police are pressed into service collecting “illegals”, a job that many are not trained for. The raid on an Iowa meatpacking plant in 2006 is an example of the ineptitude of that illustrious department. Non illegals testified during a lawsuit hearing of being handcuffed and detained for hours without food and water. Were these meatpacking workers planning another 9/11? I don’t condone the illegals but they are here to earn money to support their families not for acts of terrorism. There are a mounting number of lawsuits because of the way the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement is being run. Rather than building walls I believe that we need changes in the law to allow illegal immigrants to work legally and earn their way to citizenship. I see the Homeland Security Department and the Department of Immigration and Customs Enforcement part of a problem that the next president needs to address. These two departments seem to be working hand in glove.
