A study in the New England Journal of Medicine is rather shocking. Even insured children aren’t getting proper health care. This starts in the area of basics, being screened for childhood diseases, getting weighed and measured and so forth plus preventive care that could save lives and cause huge medical expenses at a later date. Children suffering severe and/or chronic sicknesses aren’t always getting the recommended care, possibly because they are not getting enough time with their physicians.

This study deals with insured, middle-class, mainly white urban children. What is happening to minority children, the uninsured or those living in rural areas? Children could die from easily treatable illness. The SCHIP program would have included an initiative to find ways to improve care for children covered by S-chip and by Medicaid. The Grinch in the White House vetoed the SCHIP program, now it’s time for Congress and the House to override that veto.
