Now here’s a topic that I can sink my teeth into. Is Arizona still the wild west? After a recent campus shooting, a state lawmaker is proposing a bill to allow those over 21 to carry concealed weapons at public colleges and universities. The police chiefs at Arizona’s universities and several law enforcement groups have condemned the bill. Come on now, with the country’s poor record of letting mentally unstable people get their hands on guns legally, this kind of law seems to open the door for more shooting. Mentally ill people or psychopaths wouldn’t have to sneak their guns on campus.
While the NRA fights for the “Right to bear arms” remember that law was enacted when people were fighting indians. There were no automatic weapons at that time and I think that children often, as young as ten, weren’t carrying guns to school. I am anti-gun and I hate the huge lobby that supports the NRA and makes sure that we have very weak gun control laws. In my opinion the NRA does this country a great disservice by not working toward better gun control laws to protect people from the guns that they feel everyone has a right to own. I so tired of their mantra “Guns don’t kill people, people kill people”. If there were fewer guns in the hands of criminals and unstable people there would be fewer gun deaths.
Lethal attacks attract a lot of publicity but they don’t happen frequently. These attacks allow gun promoters to jump on a bandwagon and call for fewer restrictions on carrying firearms. 15 states are considering legislation that would allow or make it easier for people to carry guns on school or college campuses. Right now Utah is the only state with a law that allows people with a concealed-weapon permit to carry guns on college campuses. In case of an attack of some kind how will police decide who is the gunman if there are a lot of people with guns? In my opinion, better security and systems of alerting people about dangerous incidents are better ways to help protect students and teachers.
