I was shocked to hear about the study made of the number of students in the U.S. that do not graduate from high school and nation wide 7,000 students drop our per day. In 17 of the largest cities less than 40 % graduate. I’m appalled at these figures. What has happened to our educational system? What has happened to our social structure and the parents needed to urge their children to get an education? Where is the fortitude to insist that kids learn the basics from the first grade on and not be pushed along until they have an understanding of what they’ve been taught? I understand the challenges for teachers and school administrators but look what has happened. In Detroit, the worst city in the study, only one in four students graduate from high school. ONE IN FOUR! How many jobs are available to those without diplomas? Detroit is just one city of many with low levels of graduating students. This is a problem over our entire nation. What will this situation do to the Welfare System? How many will turn to crime and end in the prison system? I see this situation leading to further downfall of U.S. in the eyes of the world, if it can go much lower after the Bush fiasco. Why can’t the U.S. educate it’s youth? Think of this, there aren’t enough skilled workers in the U.S. to fill jobs that pay $80,000 to $100,000 a year

One stumbling block in education is money. Money for the right kind of programs to help those kids already in the system who are failing and need an extra push. Money to pay teachers a decent wage to make sure that good teachers are compensated for their efforts. Let’s put all that war money into bringing the U.S. back to where is should be, a leader in the world.
