In an era of mega grocery centers some chains are starting to discover that mini stores that carry more, easy to grab, prepared or easy to prepare meals, fresh produce and grab-and-go drinks are gaining favor. Grocery stores are beginning to shrink. For busy people, time is important and wandering hugh stores for just a few items is a waste of time. Warehouse-style stores and supercenters considered choice important but sometimes choice can be overwhelming. Even for someone like me, who has few time constrictions, I’d prefer to chose between half a dozen similar items rather that twenty, just look at the cereal isle and you’ll get a picture of what I mean.

While the large grocery chains are not thinking of closing their larger stores they want to be able to service people who do not have time for a long shopping trip. I may not be the only one who would prefer less assortment. I miss the old “mom and pop” stores that were forced out by the big chains. To my mind it was a friendlier atmosphere in which to shop. Thank goodness some neighborhood stores still exist. I’m a Trader Joe’s fan where I can fine a good assortment yet not be overwhelmed and they have fresh, prepared foods for busy shoppers. Their prices are within reason too. If at all possible I avoid the large “warehouse” like stores. The smaller stores are a trend that just may catch on. I guess that I am spoiled because of having lived in Europe where “mom and pop” stores are the rule in the smaller cities.
