I cannot let today go by without a few comments about Don Imus. I have never listened to what he spews on his show and never will, but now that one of his many racist comments has made National news I may as well stick in my two cents. His poor excuse of it being said as a joke made me gag. How is demeaning women and people of color a joke? Another excuse of his was that the phrase he used, came from the black community. If it’s used in the black community, it’s just as disgusting there. The need to disparage the dignity of another human being comes, in my opinion, from the mind of a sick person, one who feels that he has no power except thru venomous words about others.
Young rap artists use all kinds of language, in their raps, that the world can live without. They are mostly young and unthinking. I see it as a phase that will one day pass when they gain a little maturity. Some will never mature beyond that stage of “feeling big†by using language that most people find offensive. I liken it to when my boys were small and said their first “naughty†word. They would say it over and over just to see what kind of reaction that they would get. With no reaction, the novelty soon wore off. With the rappers, they have a following of young people, are making money and it will take longer to wear off. It would wear off a lot faster if advertising was dropped, that supports their records and shows until they clean up their act. I may be old, but I’m in no way a prude. I suppose that there is a time and a place for all kinds of language, but not when it is on the public airways and is hurtful to the dignity of others ‘Nuff said…Joan Lough
