It’s about time that Democrats in Congress stop trying for a compromise with very hard headed Republicans who support Bush’s “stay the course” line. It seems that they may hold the line and push for change of course and troop withdrawal. Democrats have decided on amendments that will please the base but have little chance of getting 60 votes. They will offer hard timetables on troop withdrawal, change the mission in Iraq for U.S. forces from combat to support for the Iraqi security forces, and start the deployment. Will they stick to their guns or once again fold, allowing the war to continue on and on.

Lawmakers in both parties, realize that Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki is not working on national reconciliation between Sunni, Shiite and Kurdish in Iraq. Maliki also declared that US troops will not make a difference in making reconciliciation move faster which is the main logic for the policy of the surge. Only time will tell if the Democrats will hold the line and really play hard ball.
