The report by General David Petraeus about the combat status of the war may affect the way republicans in Congress vote because of Sen. John Warner, a respected Republican in the Senate on defense issues. While he has not backed legislation calling for a withdrawal, he said he could change his mind after Petraeus gives his progress report. Warner’s influence may cause many in his party to follow him.

Petraeus’s report will be very crucial for a possible vote to withdraw or redeploy combat troops. Anti-war activists will use August, when members of Congress are home for summer recess to greet 60 Republican congressmen at airports, train stations and driveways, the first in a series of protests scheduled throughout August. Congress will have to decide whether they stand with Bush’s war or the American people.
