It seems that both candidates are refining their stance on bringing the troops home. Obama recently said that during his trip to Iraq he will consult with top military leaders there to help with his decision to bring the troops home within 16 weeks if he becomes the president. On the other hand, should he become the president, McCain may be forced to setting a date to start bringing troops home as Iraqi President Nouri al-Maliki wants a timetable for U.S. troop withdrawal .
I’m hoping that Obama is just being thoughtful about troop removal and I think that McCain may be forced into a position that he doesn’t want if Maliki insists for a troop removal deadline. McCain thinks that Maliki’s decision for troop withdrawal will be related to conditions on the ground. Both candidates seem to be moving to the middle as the election draws near. McCain is still sticking to his fear tactic mantra that “chaos, genocide and we will be back with greater sacrifice” if we set a date for withdrawal. On the other hand, Obama declared, without question, his commitment to withdrawal and says that he has always advocated caution.
