Here we go again. In Bush’s news conference yesterday, we saw that we have a president who cannot accept responsibility for the failing economy. He has placed the blame for our economy problem on the Democratic-led Congress, saying that he sent lawmakers proposals to deal with many of the nation’s economic problems but they sat on them or replaced them with approaches that he deems unacceptable. With him it’s my way or the highway. He actually thinks that the stimulus package will boost the economy. Current polls show that most people will use their checks for food, gas or to pay credit card debts. He has rejected suggestions of a second stimulus package.

Democrats blame Bush for proposing policies that would worsen the problem, not help, and that it was their duty to reject them. Today comes the release of statistics on the nation’s gross domestic product for January through March. It may well show that we are truly in a recession, something that Bush refuses to accept. Gasoline prices are the nation’s second-highest problem, behind the economy generally and, as if it will help us now, Bush wants to open a coastal strip of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge in Alaska for oil exploration and production, and to build new oil refineries and nuclear power plants. All of these ideas have been stalled in Congress.

In an Associated Press-Ipsos poll this month, 73% of the people polled do not approve of the way Bush is handling the economy. The average price of a gallon of gas up to $3.60 nationwide, and the major oil companies are reporting record profits. Never let it be said that Bush doesn’t do everything to protect the oil companies.
