Talks for ending the war are pretty much at a standstill in Congress until after August recess. Most republicans seem to have taken a wait and see attitude until the Patraus report comes out in Sept. Reports from the battlefield say that things are improving but the troop deaths continue on. It’s sad when a reporter says that the death toll for July was “only” 79. That’s 79 too many for my book. The Iraqi government is going forward with it’s August vacation so that means nothing new, as if there could be, on the Iraqi political front.
There are signs that 21 Republican Senators up for reelection in ’08 will demand a major change in September. Bush is standing firm and House and Senate Republicans still don’t appear prepared to force him to change direction. The only way Republicans will force the war’s end is if voters — especially conservative ones demand it. Polls show a majority of GOP voters still generally back the war. It’s possible that an upbeat report by Petraeus would divide Democrats.
Signs of a Bush September plan is that the White House has launched a new campaign to convince lawmakers the surge plan is working. Leading conservative columnists are arguing that the war is going better than perceived and are spreading the word that Bush has no plans to retreat. We get to sit around until Sept. watching young military personnel get blown up and shot day by day. This is such a needless waste of our military and very frustrating to know that nothing is being accompolished in DC.
