Yesterday was Veteran’s Day. I grew up knowing it as Armistice Day, a day to commemorate the end if World War II. In 1968 The Uniform Holidays Bill, a bill to allow 3 day weeknends for federal employees was passed. It let 4 national holidays fall on Monday’s. A hue and cry from veteran’s groups resulted in it reverting to Nov. 11th a long 10 years later and continuing it’s name as Veteran’s Day. The new name is fitting as it honors veteran’s of all the wars following World War II. As a federal and state holiday it is observed, in most states, by the closure of government offices and banks. Some schools and almost all businesses stay open on regular schedules.
No matter how you feel about the current war, Veteran’s Day also honors all the military who are far from home doing the duty that this administration has forced upon them. I thank them for their dedication and will continue to work toward bringing them home as soon as possible.
