Three days before Gen. Petraeus gives Congress his views on the war in Iraq, he told troops that there is some progress in establishing security but that we are controlling insurgents. He is disappointed with the Iqaqi progress toward national reconciliation, the chief reason for the “surge” and that it had not worked out as hoped. We have 168,000 troops in Iraq. How long can we sustain such a large number now that it seems that the “surge” did not work? What will be the excuse to keep them there? Will we be asked to give the Iraqi government more time?
It is expected that Gen Petraeus will recommend to Bush that current U.S. troop levels be maintained in Iraq through next spring. Eight of our brave military were killed yesterday alone. How much longer must we continue to see our young men and women lose their lives or be gravely wounded so the Iraqi government can get it’s act together? We seem to be stuck in Iraq.
