The word homeless really bothers me. To think that in a country as rich as ours that there are homeless people is a disgrace. I have worked as a volunteer with the homeless for over 10 years. Many that I have seen over the years are veterans of Viet Nam and the Korean War. Will veterans of Desert Storm and Iraq be joining them. Many have mental problems and often do not take the meds that they need. The New York Times reports that 25% of the homeless are veterans. If our brave military returning home from the Iraq War are not being taken by our government in a timely fashion, they too may become homeless. This is something that we, as American’s, should fight to rectify.
