The assassination of Benazir Bhutto in Pakistan has created a problem for the U.S. Officials in the U.S. suspect that a Taliban leader may have plotted to assassinate Bhutto but the Pakistani Interior Ministry claims to have proof that al-Qaeda is behind the assassination. So far, that claim has not shown up on radical Islamist Web sites that usually post such messages from al Qaeda and other militant groups. Taliban leader Baitullah Mehsud is a leading suspect. Enazir Bhutto had been on the hit list of terrorists ever since she returned to Pakistan.

It is believed that al Qaeda was systematically targeting state institutions in order to destabilize the country. Democracy is a big threat to the radical groups. Bhutto was considered the most precious American asset by the radical groups. Followers of Bhutto dismissed the official explanation of the assassination and said President Pervez Musharraf’s administration was trying to cover up its failure to protect her. There is rioting in the streets and Musharraf’s announcement that the elections will take place as planned has done nothing to calm things.
